People of Ipswich is a love letter to the city by award-wining photographer Amanda Waschevski.
People of Ipswich is a love letter to the city, a visual celebration of diversity, humanity, and our shared sense of place. This project reimagines the gallery experience through a "Reverse Exhibition", where the creative process becomes the artwork itself.
From 26 August to 6 September 2026, the Ipswich Community Gallery transforms into a functioning portrait studio. Up to 200 residents are invited to sit for a professional black-and-white portrait, capturing the essence of our city through its people. Rather than opening with finished works, the exhibition grows in real time: as each image is printed on-site using archival materials, it is immediately added to the gallery walls, building a collective mosaic of the community.
This participatory format dissolves the barrier between artist and audience, fostering a deep sense of belonging and recognition. By documenting the human landscape during a time of rapid growth, the project creates a lasting cultural record that honours the individuality and quiet dignity of everyday Ipswich residents. At the close of the exhibition, participants take their portraits home, embedding the art directly back into the hearts of the community.
