Rainforest Trees, Timber and Garden Design

From Rainforest to Garden: Timber, History and Design

Join Kevin Ahearn and Robert “The Mountain Man” Wilson for a fascinating talk exploring the beauty, history and ongoing influence of rainforest trees in Ipswich and surrounding districts.

Kevin Ahearn will begin by sharing the story of local rainforest species, the region’s logging history, and the remarkable qualities of the timbers they produced. From woods valued for carving and craftsmanship to those used in furniture, tables and practical building, Kevin brings to life the importance of these trees and the rarity of seeing such timber worked with skill and respect today.

Following on from this, horticulturist Robert Wilson will show how the essence of the rainforest can be recreated in the home garden. Through thoughtful plant selection and design, Robert will explore how to build layers of texture, colour and form using ferns, orchids, understory shrubs and trees, along with natural elements such as logs, stone and water, to capture the magic of a rainforest setting.

Together, this talk offers a deeper appreciation of rainforest trees not only as part of our local history, but as inspiration for beautiful, immersive gardens today. It is a celebration of knowledge, craftsmanship, plants and place.
